Deforestation

Dense forest once covered most of the high mountains. The roots of the trees held the thin layer of soil in its place. The trees also acted as sponges and let water flow very slowly downhill. Because land has become scarce, some people go to mountain forest simply to clear more land for agriculture. Some other go for commercial timber, food and building material.
When the forest have gone, water rushes down the mountainsides in torrents whenever it rains. It destroys villages and agricultural land. The worst thing the water takes the mountain soil away with it.
